Thryfter Thursday 03.28.2024

Today marks the return of our Thryfter Thursdays, and we are thrilled to kick things off with an incredible thrifting success story we’re excited to share—ThriftsBy.Lo, created by Lauren Bartu, who embarked on this journey in July of last year! With nearly a year under her belt, Lauren has been passionately steering her business forward.

Lauren Bartu

The Beginning of the Journey

Lauren’s love for shopping and styling clothes has been a lifelong passion. Last summer, inspired by fellow resellers on Instagram, she realized she could channel her passion into something more meaningful by starting a thrifting account. “It’s been a huge blessing and a passion project that I absolutely love working on. It allows me to shop sustainably—not just secondhand but also for others, rather than overbuying for myself,” says Lauren. With a background in graphic design and a keen eye for aesthetics, she’s relished in creating a brand and unique style for her shop.

Thryft Ship Connection

Introduced to Thryft Ship through other resellers, Lauren quickly embraced the platform and hasn’t looked back since. She acknowledges the pivotal role Thryft Ship has played in streamlining her shipping process, remarking, “I unexpectedly love the business side of it, and Thryft Ship plays a huge part in that! When I was initially researching how to start an online shop, the shipping aspect stressed me out more than anything else. Thankfully, with Thryft Ship, the entire shipping process is such a breeze. I seriously can’t imagine doing this without them!”

Little by Little

Building a successful business requires dedication, hardwork, and patience. When starting out, Lauren employed various marketing strategies, including seeking shoutouts, leveraging word-of-mouth referrals from friends and family, targeting followers of other resellers, and participating in giveaways. These efforts have paid off, with her account experiencing significant growth in recent months. Now, she focuses on staying active and engaging with her followers through reels, stories, and sales, which has been immensely rewarding.

Rewards

For Lauren, the most rewarding aspects of her journey with ThriftsBy.Lo have been experiencing the kindness of the Lord in allowing her business to flourish into something she loves doing and makes a living from. Additionally, the engagement from her community of buyers and resellers has been incredibly fulfilling, fostering meaningful connections she never thought possible.

Upcoming Finds

Exciting spring pieces are on the horizon for Lauren! Stay tuned on her Instagram for updates about her upcoming drops! Click here to check it out.

As we conclude

In the vast landscape of online thrifting, there’s a gem that stands out with its unique blend of flair, originality, and a touch of familial nostalgia – Sunny Threads Thrift Co. (@Sunnythreadsthrift). Owned and curated by the talented Kat Spieldenner, whose thrifting journey has evolved into a thriving business, Sunny Threads has captured the hearts of fashion enthusiasts and vintage lovers alike. Let’s delve into the origin story of this charming venture and the wisdom Kat has gleaned from running her own business.

The Roots: A Family Affair

For Kat, thrifting wasn’t just a hobby; it was a cherished family tradition. Fond memories of her dad guiding her and her sister through the aisles of their local Goodwill, imparting the wisdom of spotting a good deal, laid the foundation for what would later become Sunny Threads. The thrill of discovering unique patterns and colors fueled Kat’s passion for fashion, making thrifting a regular part of her life. However, as she transitioned into early adulthood, Kat realized that not everyone shared this experience. This revelation sparked the idea of bringing the joy of thrifting to others, laying the groundwork for Sunny Threads Thrift Co.

Thrifting in the Digital Age: A Revelation

In the summer of 2020, the concept of online thrifting caught Kat’s attention. While large platforms like Poshmark existed, they felt impersonal and overwhelming. It was the discovery of “Thriftstagram” that truly captivated Kat. The intimate and personal touch of individual thrift accounts inspired her to take the plunge.

After weeks of contemplation and envisioning, Kat realized she had the skills and dedication needed to curate a collection that would resonate with others. And thus, Sunny Threads Thrift Co. was born, bringing a curated selection of vintage treasures to the digital realm.

Building a Following: Genuine Connections and Themed Drops

Spreading the word about Sunny Threads wasn’t just about marketing; it was a testament to the supportive network surrounding Kat. Leveraging her main account and reaching out to her circle, Kat introduced Sunny Threads to the world. Interaction with other thrift accounts and the support of friends played a crucial role in the gradual growth of the business. Kat’s commitment to quality and creativity was evident in themed drops, such as the Narnia and Pride & Prejudice collections, which not only became a signature of Sunny Threads but also fostered engagement from customers.

Balancing Act: Priorities and Shaping a Lifestyle

Maintaining balance in life and business is a continuous process, and for Kat, it’s about understanding priorities. In the early days, Sunny Threads took precedence as Kat shaped her life around the business. However, as life brought new responsibilities, including marriage and a full-time ministry role, priorities shifted. Now, Sunny Threads is shaped around Kat’s life, allowing for authentic and intentional content creation rather than a frantic schedule.

Lessons from the Journey: Grace and Divine Guidance

Running a small business, as Kat attests, requires an abundance of grace. Whether it’s extending grace to oneself for not meeting perfection or navigating the relentless critiques of the social media world, the foundation lies in recognizing that the business is a gift from a higher source. Kat finds solace in the wisdom of Galatians 1:10 and Psalm 127:1, understanding that success or failure is ultimately in the hands of a higher power.

Words of Wisdom: Stay True to Yourself

For those embarking on their entrepreneurial journey, Kat emphasizes the importance of gaining inspiration without losing oneself in the comparison game. While there are countless creative and inspiring accounts out there, staying true to one’s vision is key to building an authentic and fulfilling business.

A Thrifter’s Haven: ThryftShip Connection

Kat’s introduction to ThryftShip was a result of a friendly message, and the exceptional customer service kept her loyal. Rapid responses, swift problem-solving, and unwavering support solidified the partnership between Sunny Threads and ThryftShip. It’s a testament to the power of genuine connections in the business world.

Sneak Peek: Upcoming Gilmore Girls Drop

As a treat for Sunny Threads enthusiasts, Kat unveils an upcoming drop inspired by the beloved Gilmore Girls, set to take place on Saturday, November 18th. Expect cozy sweaters, flannels, and coffee-slurping staples that pay homage to Lorelai, Rory, Luke, and a few other familiar faces.

In the world of Sunny Threads Thrift Co., each piece tells a story, and Kat Spieldenner is the storyteller, weaving a narrative of nostalgia, passion, and authenticity. As the journey continues, Sunny Threads remains not just a business but a vibrant tapestry of personal and shared experiences in the world of thrifting.

As always, Happy Thryfting,

Hey there, Thryfters! In this week’s edition of Thryfter Thursday, we’re delighted to introduce you to the talented and passionate Angelina Bolanger, the creative force behind the thriving Instagram page @upcycledunitee. Join us as we dive into Angelina’s inspiring journey, exploring the roots of her business, her tenacity in the face of challenges, and the invaluable lessons she’s learned along the way.

Finding Passion in Thrift: A Humble Beginning

In the midst of a pandemic and her college years, Angelina discovered her love for thrifting. Seeing peers venture into the world of online clothing sales, she found her own inspiration. “I already loved thrifting,” she says, “so I went out and bought just 10 items and had my first drop.” With a handful of carefully curated pieces, Upcycled Unitee was born.

Consistency and Connection: Keys to Success

One of Angelina’s vital lessons for fellow business owners revolves around consistency. “Be consistent,” she advises, “your customers will love consistency as there will be something for them to count on.” Indeed, her dedication to regular posts and engaging content has created a loyal customer base, eagerly anticipating her updates.

Conquering Challenges and Cherishing Growth

Every business faces hurdles, and for Angelina, finding space for her growing inventory was a significant challenge. From utilizing a corner of her dorm room to dedicating an entire room in her house, her journey shows the importance of adaptation and appreciation for progress. “It makes me appreciate it a lot more knowing how it used to be,” she reflects.

Motivation from the Heart: Customers as Driving Force

For Angelina, the source of her motivation stems from her customers. Their enthusiasm, evident in their recurring bids and purchases, fuels her drive. “It makes me want to find new and cute stuff each week, knowing that I have people out there who will give it a great new life,” she shares.

The Power of Networking and Integrity

In the early days, Angelina strategically utilized shoutouts and networked with similar-sized accounts to boost her visibility. Yet, amidst her business strategies, she maintained a steadfast principle: “Never sell over retail. I do not think it is fair at all for thrifted clothes to be sold over their retail price.” This commitment to fairness and integrity has undoubtedly contributed to her loyal customer base.

Role Models and Triumphs: Drawing Inspiration

Scarlett Johansson serves as Angelina’s role model, embodying the spirit of creative evolution and pursuing one’s passions fearlessly. Angelina admires Scarlett’s transition from a successful film career to entrepreneurship, mirroring her own journey of transformation and growth.

Celebrating Milestones and Future Excitement

In a recent triumph, Angelina hit 7k followers, a testament to her hard work and the appeal of Upcycled Unitee. Looking forward, she teased an upcoming “Lover” collection, timed in honor of the recent Taylor Swift movie release. It’s bound to be a treat for her dedicated followers.

Thryfter Thursday 10.05

Hey there, thrift enthusiasts! Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to reveal the story of Closet.by.Cassidy, a delightful treasure trove where pre-loved fashion finds new life. In a candid Q&A session, Cassidy O’Brien, the creative powerhouse behind this thriving venture, shared the intimate details of her journey into the world of reselling and her love affair with second-hand style.

Every successful business has its unique origin story. We’d love to hear yours. Could you walk us through the early days, the spark that ignited your passion, and the journey that led to the establishment of your business?

I am a full-time student and stay-at-home mom. I began reselling baby items in 2020. Then, in 2021, I was moving and needed to clean out my closets. I began posting on Mercari, and that is when my business started. Soon after, I found a whole community on Instagram through another small business closet page. This was the perfect opportunity for me to work while I was a stay-at-home mom and full-time student.

Spreading the word about a new venture can be challenging. How did you initially introduce your business to the world and create that initial buzz? Share your strategies for gaining a following, building a community, and fostering connections with your audience.

I became friends with another small business who supported me and gave me tips along the way. I was very consistent on my page and have made many small business friends since. Building relationships have helped me gain following and supporters through word of mouth. Many families and friends shop with me now.

Maintaining a balance between running a business and managing personal life is an art. Could you share your insights into how you stay organized? Do you have specific routines, tools, or techniques that help you manage your business commitments while juggling other aspects of your life?

Staying organized and balancing being a mom, going to school, my business, and socializing was something I had to learn and prioritize. Now that my business is more established, it is a lot easier. I always plan out my weeks ahead of time so I know what I am doing and when I am doing it. I have different days and times of the day where I prioritize certain tasks and activities.

Running a business is a continuous learning process. Reflecting on your journey, what would you say is the most significant lesson you’ve learned so far? It could be a challenge faced, a surprising discovery, or a personal realization. How has this lesson shaped your approach to entrepreneurship?

I have learned a ton since starting my own business. I think the most important thing would be to always be yourself, stay consistent , and slow down and take breaks when needed.

For those just starting their entrepreneurial journey, your experiences can be invaluable. What advice or recommendations would you give to others trying to start their own business? Are there specific strategies, mindset shifts, or resources that you found particularly helpful and believe others should know about?

I would recommend to be yourself and not to follow others patterns. Every small business is unique in their own way which is what makes them special.

We’ve noticed you’re a loyal ThryftShip user, and we appreciate your trust in our service. We’re curious, how did you first hear about ThryftShip, and what made you decide to incorporate it into your operations? We’d love to hear your experience and how it has streamlined your shipping process.

I filled out a form for Thepeoplesthreadco and loved the process. That’s when I decided to give it a shot on my own account and it has saved me so much time on shipping days.

Lastly, our readers love an insider scoop! Do you have any exciting upcoming drops or events you’d like our audience to know about? Feel free to share a glimpse into what’s on the horizon for your business, and let our readers get excited alongside you.

Every Thursday evening at 7:30 pm pst I have my most popular sale which is a fill a bag sale.

Thryfter Thursday 09.21

Hey there, folks! Today, we’re turning the spotlight onto a true local gem – Claudia Cantu, the heart and soul behind a small business that’s making waves in our community. Get ready to meet this dynamic entrepreneur who’s carving her own path in the business world, one creative idea at a time. So, grab a cup of your favorite brew, settle in, and let’s dive into the inspiring journey of Claudia Cantu and her fantastic small business! 🌟💼☕

Q: What is your origin story and how did your business come to be?

Claudia:  The Peoples Thread Company was originally an idea I came up with during the height of COVID-19 in 2019. I was stuck in my house and decided to come up with a plan on how I (an Earth lover and adventurer) could make my difference in the world, even if it were a slither of help.

I first started out on depop selling clothing from my personal closet, all gently used/brand new, as “findsbyclaudia.” A few months later, I decided I wanted to do more as I learned a lot about how our earth has tons of landfills for clothing/garbage, the majority of which is CLOTHING! That was a massive eye-opener for me, and I felt there needed to be a change within  “fast fashion,” so I started up a “slow” fashion business called “The Peoples Thread Company”.

Since the start, we have now saved over 9000+ items from landfills, shipped throughout the United States, and planted 250+ trees within the world. With every purchase made, I take textiles that are damaged and make them into something new from the piles of clothes that would otherwise reach the landfills. Our goal at the people’s thread is to spread kindness, education & awareness on how To keep the earth green and what we can do to make a difference.

Q: How did you initially spread the word about your business and gain a following?

Claudia: I had a tough time gaining followers for my business in the very first couple of months. However, once I made friends with other small businesses, I could learn from them and do live sales with them!

I learned I needed an aesthetic- or something that sets me apart from other businesses- to gain any following! — It was a HUGE learning process and still is!

However, I intended to gain a genuine following as numbers don’t matter to me, so don’t focus too much on how many people follow you and think about the authenticity of your crowd and customers! 🙂

Q: How do you stay organized when it comes to balancing your business with other parts of your life?

Claudia: I make a schedule weekly! I am also a full-time business management student, so some days, it can get hard, especially with tying self-care into the schedule. Running a business can be very hard but worth it! And REMEMBER, YOU run your business, not anyone else! — –Change that schedule if you have to! Put yourself first!

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from running your own business?

It is NEVER easy. This is a journey of lots of learning as time goes by. Many people often think the process of starting a business is ABC, 123, but it’s more like “ajb482k.” HAHA!

Be PATIENT; do not rush your business to become a certain way either; time will do its thing, and you will learn that on your journey to success.

Q: What would you recommend to others trying to start their own business?

Think about the purpose of starting a business, set goals (even little ones!), and create a support team that will be there for you and answer your questions.

Q: We are so appreciative of you being a loyal Thryft Ship user. How did you hear about us?

A few of my business friends used ThryftShip and said it was easy to use! I used it so many times with other accounts and felt it made everything very organized for me as it is so easy for DM’s to get lost! It’s also so much easier to use! I wish I had it around when I first started my business!

Q: Do you have any upcoming drops you’d like our readers to know about?

Claudia: Absolutely! I have sales 2-3 times a week and a story sale. I’m also introducing “fill a bag” into the mix. Stay tuned for some fantastic deals!

Claudia Cantu’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and purpose in entrepreneurship. Her commitment to sustainability and her dedication to making a positive impact on the environment serve as an inspiration to us all. Keep an eye out for her upcoming sales, and remember, your business journey is unique – embrace it and enjoy the ride!❤

As always, Happy Thryfting and Happy Shipping!

Love,

Hey there, folks! Today, we’re shifting the spotlight onto a remarkable small business owner named Chelsea. 🌟 We’re about to dive into her inspiring journey, her passion project, and the secrets to her success. So grab your favorite beverage, get comfy, and let’s get to know Chelsea and her business on a personal level! 🚀💼

Unearthing Chelsea’s Thrifting Journey

Meet Chelsea, a seasoned thrifter who’s been at it since she was a kid. But what drove her into the world of thrifting?

“In the beginning, it was mostly out of necessity. I’m one of five kids, and it was certainly more affordable than clothing from department stores.”

Now, let’s dig into the backstory of her thriving business.

Crafting a Following: The Early Days

Starting any venture from scratch is never easy, but Chelsea managed to carve a niche for herself. How did she initially spread the word about her business and gain a following?

“It was word of mouth and searching ‘reselling/thrifting’ hashtags in the beginning. Following like-minded accounts, and sharing mine with my friends. Slowly I began meeting some other thrift accounts, and we shared about each other’s drops.”

Balancing Act: Life and Business

Running a business while juggling life’s demands is a feat in itself. How does Chelsea manage to stay organized when it comes to balancing her business with other parts of her life?

“I am still figuring out how to stay organized! Haha, I love to thrift and can take my kids with me (they are 5 and almost 3), they do super well. But I don’t always get to come straight home and do a thrift haul, or process/price my items right away, which would be ideal.”

The Power of Consistency

Chelsea has learned a valuable lesson from running her own business. What is it? “Consistency makes a huge difference!” This simple yet profound insight has played a crucial role in her journey.

Words of Wisdom: Starting Your Own Business

Thryfter Thursday 05.25

Hey, y’all!

We are back once again for another Thryfter Thursday! We had to take a short break due to life events like final exams, graduations, and killing it at pitch competitions! We are now back in business and ready to highlight our wonderful small business owners again!

Today we have the amazing Bailee Gauld, the founder of @b.b.thrift. Bailee’s online store focuses on vintage and urban clothing. Keep reading to find out more about Bailee and her business.

Bailee, can you walk us through your origin story and how your business came about?

“I’ve always been an avid thrifter. But around the time I had my second baby, I discovered some thrifting pages, and I fell in love with the idea of the business. I was shortly going to become a SAHM and thought I could use my thrifting hobby to make some money for myself since I wouldn’t be working anymore. So I started my page in December of 2021 and have been doing it ever since!”

That’s so amazing that you took a chance on yourself and pursued your business so that you can have more flexibility with your schedule to balance being a working mom.

Next up, when you start a new business, getting your initial customers and raising that brand awareness can take time and effort. Let us know what you did to market your business when you started.

“I asked for help from lots of other thrifting businesses. I asked for advice or whatever tips or tricks they could give me. Another is that whenever I saw an opportunity to join a giveaway, I took it. There are so many people who join giveaways who may never have seen your account otherwise. And lastly, if I saw another page post a piece that I just fell in love with, I would share it on my own page. Being supportive of other pages is such a great way to make friends, and quite often, they will return the favor!”

We love that you mentioned asking for help; it is super important to be able to rely on your community or even strangers sometimes. Speaking of asking others for help, is there any advice you’d give fellow business owners or people looking to start their own business?

“Be patient and consistent. I got down on myself way too much when I first started this business, and I still do. I wouldn’t have the following that I do now or any of the friends I made if I had given up. Posting consistently, whether it just be a ‘good morning’ post or your recent thrift finds, keeps your followers engaged and also just keeps the algorithm in your favor. Don’t ever be afraid to reach out to other businesses similar to yours and ask for help. This is such a loving and supportive community, and we love to help each other.”

You mentioned being patient and consistent, which is very important when you are a business owner (whether new or old) because things sometimes go differently than planned. Keeping this in mind, we’d like to know what keeps you motivated to keep you going?

“I love when I find a cool vintage piece, and someone messages me and tells me that their dad, grandpa, etc. used to have the same one. I love how thrifting vintage clothes can be so nostalgic for so many people. Although I do thrift lots of vintage clothing, I also thrift anything that fits my style/aesthetic. Many of the pieces that fall into that category would cost an arm and a leg to buy retail. I love that I’m able to find these things and sell them for a far more affordable price. Everyone should be able to wear any and all brands, and that’s not always possible when you shop retail.”

There is definitely a lot of sentimental value that goes into thrifting! What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome as a business owner?

“The best way that I can think of to describe it is that comparison is the thief of joy. If you had told me I would be where I am today when I first started, I would have been ecstatic. But then I see the other pages with lots of followers and tons of sales, and I start to compare. This struggle is a human flaw, but just something I’ve learned to ignore.”

We already asked about a challenge you had to overcome, but can you now tell us about a recent success that you are proud of?

“Honestly, being asked to do this was so encouraging! I was thrilled when I received the message from Thryft Ship.”

Aww, we really love to hear that! We want to continue working on products that make operating efficiently easier for small business owners. Thank you for being a Thyrft Ship client and user for over a year. How did you hear about us?

“Through other thrift friends :).”

Nice! Word of mouth is vital to get our brand out there to positively impact more businesses! Speaking of word of mouth, do you have any upcoming drops you’d like our readers to know about?

“I often have one live sale each week or one drop each week! They’re never on the same days, as I stay home with my 1 and 2-year-olds. But if you keep an eye out for my stories, you won’t ever miss them!”

How absolutely amazing! Thanks Bailee for your time and your beautiful words. We can’t wait to continue watching your businesses flourish.

So Milea… can you get us started on how your business started?

“Other instagram sellers, I started as a consumer and then decided to try thrifting in other sizes aside from mine and found amazing things”

Is there anyone you look up to in this business?

“Tipsy.thrifting because she has been supporting herself solely on this business and I want to be there as well”

Do you have any advice give to fellow business owners or people looking to start their own business?

“Just do it and be consistent with posting to social media”

That is such great advice! Consistency is key in order to be successful! We know that even with consistency sometimes, you might not always get the results you want (immediately). So, what’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

“Growing followers and customers”

In terms of growing your following, how did you market your business when it was brand new?

“Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook groups, fellow thrifters I supported in the past!”

What’s your motto in life?

“Failure is not an option”

Along with the motto question, What keeps you motivated to keep going?

“Leaving myself no other options”

Tell us about a recent success you are proud of

“A giveaway”

Speaking of giveaway, do you have any upcoming drops you’d like to mention?

“I have a giveaway going on right now and will have big lives starting in May”

Lastly, how long have you been using Thryft Ship and how did you hear about us?

“Less than a month, and I hear about you guys through @tipsythrifting”

Well, we are always so excited to welcome anyone new to our community, and we want it to continue growing. Thank you so much, Milea, for taking the time to speak with us.
