📦 How to File a USPS Claim

Marlee
April 25, 2025

If your package is missing, the first step is always to initiate a Missing Mail Search even if you plan to file a claim later. This helps USPS locate your package and often resolves the issue without further action.

👉 Start here: USPS Missing Mail Search

Start with a Missing Mail Request

Before you file a claim, give USPS a chance to locate the package by submitting a Missing Mail Search Request. This process applies to all types of mail (insured or not) and must be completed first if your tracking shows the item is lost or undelivered.

What you’ll need to submit the request:

  • Tracking number

  • Mailing date

  • Description of the package and its contents

  • Delivery and return addresses

You can start this process directly through USPS at this link.

Check if Your Shipment is Insured

You can only file a USPS claim if your package was insured. Here’s what to know:

âś… All USPS packages shipped through Thryft Ship are automatically insured up to $100, as long as they’re sent via Priority Mail or Ground Advantage.

❌ Media Mail is not eligible for insurance, and USPS does not accept claims on it.

❌ You cannot purchase additional insurance through Thryft Ship at this time.

Even though you’re using our discounted rates, USPS still honors the included insurance on eligible services for packages under $100.

File a USPS Claim (If Insurance Applies)

If your package was lost, arrived damaged, or had missing contents and it was insured, you’re eligible to file a claim after the Missing Mail Search has been initiated.

📌 Time Limits:

  • Lost Mail: File between 15 and 60 days from the mailing date

  • Damaged or Missing Contents: File immediately, up to 60 days from the mailing date

Gather What You Need

To complete a claim, make sure you have:

  • Tracking number

  • Proof of insurance (automatically applied if eligible)

  • Proof of value (sales receipt, invoice, or transaction record)

  • Photos of any damage (if applicable)

📸 Keep the original packaging and damaged items because USPS may ask to see them.

 Submit Your Claim

The easiest way to file is online:

  1. Go to the USPS Domestic Claims Portal

  2. Sign in or create a USPS account

  3. Select the reason for your claim (lost, damaged, or missing contents)

  4. Upload proof of value and any necessary documentation

  5. Review and submit your claim

What Happens Next?

  • ⏱ Processing Time: Most claims are resolved within 5–10 business days

  • đź’¸ Approved: You’ll receive compensation via check or direct deposit

  • ❌ Denied: You’ll be notified with an explanation—you can appeal within 30 days
