Package Returned? How to Resend It
If a package comes back to you, don’t stress — getting it back out is quick. The one key thing to know: a USPS label can’t be edited once it’s made, so you’ll create a fresh one with the corrected address.
- USPS labels can’t be edited or changed once they’re created.
- A returned package means the original postage is already used, so it needs a new label to go back out.
- Fix the address, buy a new label, and resend.
Can I just edit the existing label?
No — once a USPS label is created, it’s locked. The postage is tied to the exact address and details printed on it, and it can’t be changed afterward. Thryft Ship provides USPS labels, but we’re not able to modify or reissue a label once it’s been generated.
Why isn’t the new label free?
When a package is returned — say, because of an incorrect ZIP code or address — the original postage has already been used for that trip. USPS requires fresh postage to send it again, so you’ll need to buy a new label to resend the package. It’s a USPS rule, not a Thryft Ship fee.
How to resend a returned package
- Double-check the address
Find what caused the return and fix it — usually a wrong ZIP code or a typo in the address.
- Buy a new label
Create a new label with the corrected address from your Orders page. Customers are saved to their Instagram @handle, so you can pull up a repeat customer by their handle to start the new label — just be sure to enter the corrected address.
- Print and resend
Print the new label, cover the old one completely, and send the package back out.
Common questions
Can I edit the label I already made?
No — USPS labels can’t be changed once they’re created. You’ll make a new one with the corrected address.
Can I get a free replacement label?
No. The original postage was already used when the package first shipped, so USPS requires new postage to send it again.
Can I get a refund on the returned label?
A label that has already shipped can’t be refunded — only unused labels can. See How do I refund my shipping label?
