Welcome back to our Thryfter Thursday segment, where we show appreciation for small businesses, highlight their entrepreneurial journey, and learn more about their business. We recently had the opportunity to interview Josie Schmidt, the founder of The Sustainable Act (Instagram: @thesustainable.act). Keep reading to learn more.
Stop comparing yourself to other pages! It’s so easy to, I know. People love to see your personality and style! I always gravitate towards pages passionate about what they do- so I try and do the same! Just have fun! Enjoy yourself, and you’ll be a magnet to others! You’ll get burnt out when you force things and try to be someone you’re not.
In high school and college, I worked at a thrift store and loved it! I fell in love with spending less before realizing secondhand’s importance. I majored in fashion merchandising in college and soon discovered the problem with the fashion industry. I started educating myself about the danger of fast fashion and the need to reuse items we already have. I started Happy Girl Thrift during my sophomore year of college, and it was so much fun! I ran it for three years and moved on to a new job. In 2023, I rebranded to The Sustainable Act and restarted my thrift business journey! I’m absolutely in love with thrifting, reselling, and educating young women on the importance of secondhand. So excited about this new chapter!
As of now, Instagram can be super annoying because it’s become sort of a game for creators/businesses. I find myself wanting to keep gaining more and more followers, which isn’t the best. I try and have the mindset of “I will build the community I have now & love where I’m at now.”
Thank you so much, Josie, for dropping these gems, and we wish you the best in your journey!
Love,
The Thryft Ship Team
