Did Some Posts Fail? Don't Panic — Here's What to Do

3 min read · Updated August 2026

If a few items in your drop didn't post, take a breath — this is almost always temporary and easy to fix. Nothing is lost, your drop is fine, and the items that didn't go out are waiting for you. Here's why it happens and exactly what to do.

TL;DR
  • The most common cause is Instagram's posting limit — roughly 50 automated posts in a rolling 24-hour window.
  • Nothing is lost. The items that didn't post are still in your drop, ready to go.
  • Wait for the window to free up, then post the rest — or add them to your drop and post manually.
  • If it wasn't the limit, a quick check of your Instagram connection usually sorts it out.

Why some posts fail

Nine times out of ten, it's Instagram's own posting limit, not a problem with Thryft Ship or your drop. Instagram caps how many posts can be published automatically — about 50 in a rolling 24-hour period. Once you hit that ceiling, the next automated posts are held back until the window frees up. (Only automated posts count toward this; anything you post by hand on Instagram is free.)

Less often, a post can fail because of a brief Instagram hiccup or a connection that needs refreshing. Either way, the fix is simple.

Nothing is lostItems that didn't post are still sitting in your drop. You haven't lost your work, your captions, or your pricing — they're just waiting to go out.

What to do

  1. If you hit the posting limit, wait for the window to free up

Because the limit is a rolling 24 hours (not a midnight reset), space frees up gradually as your earlier posts age past the 24-hour mark. Once there's room, you can post the rest.

  2. Post the remaining items — or add them and post manually

You have two easy ways to get the rest out. The full walkthrough is in What to Do If Your Drop Has More Than 50 Items, and there's more on the limit itself in Rate Limit Reached but Items Didn't Post.

  3. If it wasn't the limit, check your Instagram connection

If you're well under the limit and posts still failed, your Instagram connection may just need a refresh. Reconnect your account in settings and try posting the held items again.

Tip: your captions are saved in InventoryEvery item's caption lives in your Inventory tab — click an item to view and copy it. So even if you post something by hand, you never have to rewrite a caption.

Common questions

Did my buyers see anything go wrong?

No. A held-back post simply hasn't appeared yet — there's no error on your buyers' end. Once you post the remaining items, they show up like any other post in your drop.

Do I need to rebuild the drop?

Not at all. The drop and every unposted item are intact. You're only finishing the posting — not starting over.

How do I avoid this next time?

If your drops regularly run past ~50 items, plan to spread posting across a longer window or post some manually. Managing drops with more than 50 items covers the tricks.
