Fee on Me: Absorbing Payment Processing Fees
If you accept payments on Thryft Ship, a key consideration to make is how you want to handle payment processing fees. Payment processing fees are fees charged by Stripe to conduct a transaction through debit or credit card. The Fee on Me feature lets you decide whether you or your customer covers payment processing fees on checkout. When enabled, your customer pays exactly your listed price—no added fees at checkout—while you absorb the processing costs.
What does “Fee on Me” do?
By default, customers pay your listed price plus Stripe’s processing fee (2.9% + $0.30). With Fee on Me turned on, your customer pays only the listed price, and you cover the Stripe fee and Thryft Ship’s 2% fee.
Example (for a $5.00 item)
Scenario | Customer Sees | You Receive (approx.) | Who Covers Processing Fee? |
---|---|---|---|
Default (Fee on Me OFF) | $5.46 | $4.89 | Customer |
Fee on Me ON | $5.00 | $4.45 | Merchant (you) |
Notes: Stripe fee shown for illustration at 2.9% + $0.30. Thryft Ship fee is 2% of the subtotal.
When should I use it?
- You want buyers to see one simple price with no added fees at checkout.
- You’re focused on reducing abandoned checkouts caused by unexpected fees.
- You’re comfortable absorbing ~3–4% more in fees per order.
How to enable Fee on Me
- Go to Settings → Payments → Accept Payments → Payment Settings.
- Toggle Fee on Me to ON.
- Review the earnings estimate shown in the fee calculator.
- Save your changes.
Default: Fee on Me is OFF for all merchants.
What your customer sees at checkout
- Fee on Me ON: Customer sees only the base price. The “processing fee” line displays
--.--
. - Fee on Me OFF: Customer sees base price + processing fee (current/default behavior).
Important notes & edge cases
- Refunds: If you refund an order, Stripe’s processing fees are deducted from your earnings; Thryft Ship returns its 2% fee on the refunded amount.
- Timing/Locking: The fee setting is captured at the moment the payment is initiated (not when the cart is created). Changing the toggle mid-cart won’t affect in-progress checkouts.
- Transparency: You can optionally tell your customers in DMs that “Price includes all fees.”
