Track Your Profit with Item Cost

3 min read · Updated July 2026

Thryft Ship can now show your profit for you, right where you manage the item. Add what you paid for an item — its Item Cost — and once it sells, your profit is calculated automatically. No spreadsheet, no math on your end.

TL;DR
  • There's a new Item Cost field on each inventory item — what you paid to source it. It's optional.
  • Once Item Cost and Sold For are both filled in, a Profit line appears automatically (Sold For minus Item Cost).
  • Item Cost and Profit are just for you — buyers never see them.

What's new

When you open an inventory item, the Pricing Information section now has one new field and one new line:

FieldWhat it is
Item CostNew. What you paid to source the item — at the thrift store, estate sale, garage sale, wherever. Optional; you type it in.
Starting BidAlready there — what the item starts at for bidding.
Buy It NowAlready there — the set Buy It Now price.
Sold ForAlready there — what the item actually sold for. Optional; can be filled in after the sale.
ProfitNew. Calculated for you: Sold For minus Item Cost. Read-only, and only shows once both of those are filled in.

How to use it

  1. Open an inventory item

Go to your inventory and open the item you want (or add a new one). Find the Pricing Information section.

  2. Enter your Item Cost

Type in what you paid to source it. This one's optional — skip it and nothing changes; fill it in and you unlock the profit math.

  3. Fill in Sold For once it sells

After the item sells, put the final sale price in the Sold For field (if it isn't already there).

  4. See your profit, automatically

The moment both Item Cost and Sold For have values, a Profit line appears — no math on your end.

A quick exampleYou grabbed a jacket for $4.00 and it sold for $28.00. Enter both, and Thryft Ship shows Profit: $24.00 right there on the item. No spreadsheet needed.
Keep it simpleProfit here is just Sold For minus Item Cost — it doesn't subtract fees, shipping, or taxes. Think of it as your quick "did this one do well?" number, not a full accounting of every cost.

Common questions

Is Item Cost required?

No. It's completely optional — it's just there if you want to track what you paid and see your profit. Leave it blank and everything else works exactly as before.

Can my buyers see what I paid or my profit?

No. Item Cost and Profit are seller-only — they live in your inventory view and are never shown to customers.

Why isn't the Profit line showing up?

Profit only appears once both Item Cost and Sold For have values. If either one is blank, the Profit line stays hidden. Fill in both and it appears.

Does Profit subtract my fees or shipping?

No — it's kept simple on purpose: Sold For minus Item Cost. Fees, shipping, and taxes aren't part of this number.

Can I see my total profit across all items?

Not yet — right now Profit shows per item. A bigger profit-across-everything view may come later.
