Hello Thryfters! Today we will discuss why thrifting is sustainable and beneficial to our environment. I’m sure you have heard of all the popular fast fashion brands. These brands typically account for 5% to 10% of global greenhouse emissions because of the way they produce, manufacture, and transport their garments. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere, ultimately warming the world. This contributes to global warming and climate change.
They contribute to global warming and climate change and use synthetic fibers like acrylic, polyester, and nylon, which are made from fossil fuels. James Conca from FORBES states, “cheap synthetic fibers also emit gases like N20, which is 300 times more damaging than CO2.” Additionally, microtrends do not help the environment. The idea of constantly keeping up with trends, changing your wardrobe every few months, and feeling the need to buy new outfits for every event contributes to the costly damage to our planet. This is why thrifting can help us and our environment.
Instead of constantly trying to keep up with trends, we should find long-lasting pieces that can be re-worn multiple times. People might think of the typical thrift store as Goodwill, which is excellent, but people must remember that there are many other outlets. The possibilities are endless, from local thrift stores to online thrift stores (Instagram, Depop, Poshmark, etc.).
