How Open Bags Work

Open bags allow customers to shop across multiple drops and combine everything into one shipment. Instead of shipping items immediately, an open bag simply tells you not to ship yet — because the customer may add more items and fill up the mailer to save on shipping.

Why sellers love it: fewer shipments, lower shipping costs, and less back-and-forth in DMs.

What an open bag is

An open bag is a simple “hold” on shipping. It means the customer has purchased items, but they’re still shopping and may add more.

In plain English

Open bag = “Don’t ship yet, they might add more.”

  • Customers can keep shopping across your drops
  • Items can be added to the same bag
  • You ship everything together when the bag closes

How open bags work

If you have open bags enabled in settings, customers will see the open bag option during checkout. When they choose it, Thryft Ship keeps the order open so additional items can be added.

What happens step-by-step

This is what you can expect after a customer starts a bag.

  • Customer wins or claims an item
  • They start an open bag
  • Future wins/claims can be added to that same bag
  • You’ll see the open bag status in your dashboard so you know not to ship yet
Pro tip: Open bags are perfect for customers who shop multiple times a week and want to combine shipping.

Open bag timelines (1–8 weeks)

You control how long open bags stay active. Set the open bag timeline in your Sales Assistant settings.

Timeline options

Choose the timeframe that matches how often you run drops.

  • You can set the open bag timeline from 1–8 weeks
  • This applies to future open bags by default

Automatic reminders before expiry

Thryft Ship automatically sends a reminder before an open bag expires, so customers don’t forget to close it.

What reminders do

Less chasing, fewer forgotten bags.

  • Customers are reminded before their bag expires
  • They can close the bag and complete checkout
  • You ship once the bag is closed
Reminder timing is controlled by your settings — you can adjust it to match your shop’s vibe.
